Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Ground Rules – Review rules with poster.
  • Read from “Babar’s Yoga for Elephants” Book
  • Belly Breathing – Using the Hoberman sphere ask the children to breathe together. Ask if their breathing changes when they are in a group. Choose a partner and sit back to back breathing together.
  • Volcano Breath – Visit some of the elephant’s favorite places, practicing yoga along the way. First stop: a famous volcano in Italy.

Activate

  • No matter where he is, Babar likes to practice his Sun Salutation every morning to wake up his body.
    • Mountain
    • Forward Fold
    • Lunge
    • Plank
    • Table Top
    • Down Dog
    • Table
    • Cobra
    • Down Dog
    • Lunge
    • Forward Fold
    • Mountain
  • When the elephants travel they like to do yoga together.
    • Partner Pull – (Pair up and practice poses together)
    • Alternate Leg Kicks (facing partner)
    • Cobra (facing partner)
    • Superman (facing partner or flying with partner)
    • One partner leads while the other follows into tree, dancer, crescent moon
  • Now the elephants and their friends gather in a circle for yoga.
    • Tree Circle, Star Circle

Calm

  • Back Drawing
  • Back Breathing
  • Final Relaxation – It’s time to rest quietly. Breathe easily and enjoy the evening’s rest. Refer back to the Elephants and the fun they had together. Remember how they supported each other and even helped each other face challenges together. Think about your family and friends and others in your own community and how they help and support you. Think of something fun you can do together.
