Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Strength

Props/Music Resources Required: Music-Anjali, CD Player, Strong Voice Handouts, Pencils, Mindful Moment Card on Strength

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman Sphere: 12 Breaths
  • Mind Moment Card on Strength – “Some people say that hardship makes a person stronger. Why do you think they say this? Have you had hardships that have made you stronger?”

Activate

  • Mat Flow Routine—Mountain to Mountain – Hold each pose for 8 counts as you find strength in your legs
  • Tree – Use your mental strength to keep your balance as you change your standing still tree–try changing your gaze or swaying your arms back and forth as though you are blowing in the wind
  • Dancer – Say to yourself “I am strong. I am in control. I can do this.” Activate and relax during the pose–notice the difference as you switch between each leg
  • Eagle – Hold Eagle for 5 breaths and then find the strength to move into Flying Eagle
  • Flying Eagle – Pretend you are an Eagle soaring in the sky opening your arms as though they were your wings
  • Woodchopper – Let go of any negativity that holds you back from shining bright and showing all of the strength you have physically, emotionally, and mentally
  • Twist – Lower self to floor–massage back and spinal twists

Calm

  • Strong Voice Handout
  • Sharing – Allow youth to share their answers and discuss what makes them strong, Discuss people who the youth look up to and consider role models, Discuss how strength can be used negatively and ways to keep that from happening
  • Compliments – Allow compliments for each youth and thank those who showed the strength to share their answers
