Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Lesson Plan:

Calm

Hoberman: Seated belly breathing (10 counts) with pulse count.

Ear to shoulder both sides (2x), Twist – turn head to look over shoulder both sides (2x), Shrug shoulders (3x), Crescent Moon seated -arms over head stretch to one side and then the other (2x).

Active

Run in place with pulse count. Compare to seated belly breathing.

Volcano breath: Think about something that makes you happy – friend, family member

Explore Feelings (modified): Make a circle by holding hands, sit down, teacher tosses the bean bag to a student who calls out a feeling and everyone shows what that feeling looks like for them, continue to toss the bean bag to different students. (Also just add in situations – how would you feel/look if someone took your toy, gave you a cookie, stepped on your toe, smiled at you, gave you a gift etc.)

Hoberman: Transition to next activity.

Less Active

Back Drawing seated on mat with partner then switch. Place your hands on the back of the person in front of you. It is starting to rain, so GENTLY tap your friend’s back with your fingertips. Now make it rain all the way down the sliding your fingers all the way down to the waist. Now make your hands into fists and make VERY LIGHT thunder up and down the back. Then, draw lightning strikes. Now, with the palm of your hands slowly make big puffy clouds up and down the back. Then, gently brush the clouds away. Now, the sun comes out. Draw a big sun with a happy face and sunglasses. Place the palms of your hands on the back in front of you. Pretend that your hands our rays from the sun sending warmth to your friend. Allow your friend a few seconds for experience this warmth. Now draw a flower or a gift for your friend. Tell your friend what you drew.

Calm

One-minute exploration lying on back: Think about a time when you laughed really hard with a friend or family member. Pay attention to how your body feels when you are laughing. Slowly sit up. Does anyone want to share who you laughed really hard with?
