Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Props/Music Resources Required: Music & CD player, Chime, Small Stuffed Animal (ie: Beanie Baby), Yoga Mat, Chime

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Chime – Ring chime and ask students to raise their hands when they no longer hear the chime.
  • Belly Breathing – with small stuffed animal: 10 breaths. Lying flat on your mat, feel your head, bottoms, and legs connected to the mat. Lengthen all the way from your toes, up your back through the top of your head. Feel supported by the mat on the floor. Take a breath in and watch your stuffed animal rise; hold for 1 second; watch it lower as you let your breath go. Close your eyes and listen to the stillness for 30 seconds.

Activate

  • Arm Swings – See how slowly you can move, like a bird flying in slow motion. As you raise your arms up and down say “I am in control.”
  • Wood Chopper – Pretend you are a wood chopper, getting ready to split a big piece of wood. Make a loud “Huh!” as you let your pretend ax hit the wood.
  • Personal Space Activity– Make a list of things that can affect a person’s need for personal space
  • Active/Relax Walk – Slowly walk around the room. When I say “activate” you freeze and let yourself be firm and focused on your pose. When I say “relax” you continue to walk slowly around the room.

Calm

  • Chime – Ring chime and ask students to raise their hands when they no longer hear the chime.
