Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Grounding

Lesson Plan:

Props/ Music/ Lights: Music, CD player, lights dimmed.

Intro: Review last lesson – What did we learn last time I came to visit?

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman Sphere: 5-6 Breaths – Classroom leader (student) will lead and choose a counter. After completion student leader/ counter will receive two complements, student may choose to call on classmates

Activate

  • Mountain – Classroom leader (student) will lead and choose a counter. After completion student leader/ counter will receive two complements, student may choose to call on classmates – “Stand tall with your king and queen crowns pointed toward the sky.” Become a strong mountain. Activate your stomach muscles for strength. Breathe in deeply and close your eyes. Imagine standing next to a beautiful mountain looking up and seeing how proud it reaches up toward the sky- reach your body tall, now focus on your feet ground yourself into the floor.
  • Read Mindful moments Grounding Card – “Imagine yourself sitting on a large warm roc on the top of a mountain. It is a clear day and you can see for miles. Where are you and what can you see?” Ask a few students to share.
  • Tree – Classroom leader (student) will lead and choose a counter. After completion student leader/ counter will receive two complements, student may choose to call on classmates
  • Mindful Moments Card – “Think of your favorite tree. Now imagine that you can plant that tree in a special place. Go to that place, did a hole and plant the tree. Imagine that you can see into the future and watch the tree grow tall.”
  • Roots – Classroom leader (student) will lead and choose a counter. After completion student leader/ counter will receive two complements, student may choose to call on classmates
  • Mindful moments card (Grounding) – ”Imagine a tunnel that goes deep into the ground. Travel that tunnel into ta small cozy room deep inside the earth. What is in the room? Who is there? Notice how it feels to be inside this room.” Ask for a student(s) to share responses.
  • Roots – “Rock body back and forth slowly with feet firmly on the ground. Make rocking smaller and smaller until you come to center. Now rock side to side return to center. Circles- smaller and smaller. Imagine something between your feet that you are circling.” Would anyone be willing to share what they circled?

Calm

  • Review questions – What did it feel like to ground yourself? When is it important to be grounded? How dies grounding help us? If you ever feel like you need to be grounded which yoga poses could you use?
  • Relaxation – “Happy Landings” Page 162 “Ready Set Relax” book.
