Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Stillness

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Hoberman Sphere and Pulse Count – Belly breathing with the Hoberman Sphere. Pulse count, 1 minute. Have a leader come up to use the sphere and count the breaths. (5-7 min)
  • Read Mindful Moment Card – “Think of a time when you held a sleeping kitten or puppy. Remember how it felt to hold it close to you. Think of holding a small sleeping baby animal and remember how still you became so you didn’t wake it.”

Activate

  • Activate/Relax Walk – Ask student helper to demonstrate Mountain Pose and how to activate the body and then how to relax the body. Now have all students try. Alternate active and relaxed. Discuss when it is a good time to be relaxed and when it is a good time to be active. (5 min) Let students compliment the demonstrator.
  • Cat/Cow – On all fours breathe out, lower head and tuck tail. Round your back like a cat. Breathe in and lift head and drop belly like a cow. Move from cat to cow and match your breath to your movement. Try and match it to the Hoberman Sphere with a student helper. Have students compliment the leader on what they thought he/she did well. (5 min)
  • Changing Channels – Have students close their eyes and notice what they begin to think about. Explain how they will practice changing channels in their minds. Give them some different scenarios to think about for about 30 seconds and then give them a different scenario that they will change the channel to….Ask the kids how this activity might be useful to them. (5 min)

Calm

  • Back Breathing – with a partner (5 min)
  • One Minute Exploration – Think about a time you did something well. (2 min)
