Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Stillness

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – Use Hoberman Sphere: Ask group how many breaths they would like to take. Invite 2 group members to lead Hoberman Sphere and to count breaths. Follow with compliments for the leaders. Prompt to get heavy in sit bones, head high like wearing a crown. Place hands on belly while breathing, imagine yourself a frog, sitting still, barely moving. (5 min)
  • Chime – Set intention for group (to encourage stillness of the mind and body) – Use chimes. While eyes still closed, read Calm Voice activity sheet. (1 min)
  • Calm Voice – Have group members then complete Calm Voice activity (students may share with a partner once completed). (5-10min)

Activate

  • Form a Circle – three feet apart with one another. (3 min)
  • Roots – (find stillness through your breath, find your calm voice)
  • Star Pose – (star shining out bright and beautiful)
  • Tree – Find your stillness. Visualize a lake when there is no wind to disturb the water. See the stillness of the lake in your mind. Imagine the stillness of the trees and the surrounding quiet. Hold tree for five beats of a drum. (2 min)
  • Tree Circle – Invite two group members (if large enough group), or one member, to be an “animal.” Do with support of the circle and without while member makes animal noises. Follow with discussion on what helped members find their stillness. (5 min)

Calm

  • Back Breathing – (Process once completed how experience was for each group member, and how they could use outside of the group) (10 min)
  • Relaxation – Mindful Moment card on principle of Stillness (self-exploration for 1 minute). Each group member has their own copy to read silently prior to one-minute self-exploration.
