Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Listening

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – using Hoberman Sphere (Youth led and decide how many breaths. Have a counter as well, followed by compliments). Listen to your breath as it fills your lungs, and leaves your body. Imagine your breath like you are listening to the waves coming in to the shore and back out. (5 min)
  • Chime – to set intention – Group puts thumb up when no longer hearing the chime. (1 min)

Activate

  • Name Toss Game – Form a circle, go around and say name. Then say your name and toss object to someone else in the circle. Toss the object to the same person this time not saying their name but getting eye contact first then tossing object. (Discuss afterwards what helped students silently listen to person they were tossing object to) (10 minutes)
  • Yoga Flow – Yoga Calm (middle of Mat 20 – Sun Salutations, i.e. Mountain to second Mountain) – go into the next position when listening for the beat of the drum. Stay four corners strong. Hold the pose not your breath (repeat this twice through). (20 min) Play music with nature/rainforest that includes animal sounds, etc. Each time there is the sound of the drum, go into next pose while also tuning into a new sound that wasn’t listened to before. (15 minutes)

Calm

  • Relaxation – Read Mindful Moment card: Remember a time when a friend listened to you. Who was that friend? How did that make you feel?” (one-minute self-exploration)
