Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Volcano Breath – Practice volcano breath and send a positive thought to a friend, family member, or family animal. Let several children share out.

Active

  • Yoga Calm Mat 20 – Lead the group in Mat 20 with a teacher leader. Then ask the group to practice quietly, without words. Stand in Mountain at the end of the flow and beat the drum silently for 8 beats. Then stand in stillness and notice how your body feels.
  • Trust Walk – Demonstrate with a teacher leader. The teacher carefully leads the student around the room, moving slowly and watching their partners face for nonverbal cues as to whether they feel safe. The teacher informs the children that their role as a guide is to make the person they are guiding feel safe. Demonstrating backing the student up, turning in different directions etc. The teacher informs the group that they will have a “surprise” guide. Half the group will get up and find a place to stand on one side of the room, close their eyes, and hold out their pinky. The other half of the students will very quietly find a person to guide. Teacher will stop students after approximately 3 minutes. Those who are being led will keep their eyes closed while their partner guesses who has been leading them. Students will repeat the process with the roles being reversed.

Calm

  • Guided Relaxation – (Loving Kindness) – Teacher will walk students through “Getting Comfortable” and then move into the guided relaxation passage.
