Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Listening

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – Hoberman sphere breathing-the VIP for the day will lead breathing and will choose someone to count.
  • Compliments – the leader will choose 2 students to give compliments, the counter will choose one student.
  • Pulse Count – Close your eyes. Does your pulse feel fast or slow? What do you think your body is telling you when your pulse is fast? What do you think your body is telling you when your pulse is fast?

Activate

  • Yoga Flow – Students spread out in the room. Lead students through familiar flow of mountain, upward mountain, forward bend, mountain three times.
  • Archetype Game – tie archetype game to current ELA standard of character traits. Introduce Trickster, Wise Queen or King, Monster, Angel , Clown and Courageous Explorer, with examples from books we’ve been reading together. I will select one of the archetypes and when they hear the chime they’ll move around the room like that archetype would. There is no running, talking or touching. When they hear the chime again they stop where they are and crouch down, thinking about how it felt to be that archetype. Repeat with the rest of the archetypes.

Calm

  • Mountain – Return to mountain pose.
  • Belly Breathing – Hoberman sphere breathing-the VIP for the day will lead breathing and will choose someone to count.
  • Pulse Count – Close your eyes. Does your pulse feel fast or slow? What do you think your body is telling you when your pulse is fast? What do you think your body is telling you when your pulse is fast?
  • Relaxation/Writing – Return to seats for silent written reflection. Which archetype did you like acting out most? Why do you think you liked it? Which archetype were you least comfortable with? Why do you think it was uncomfortable?
