Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community
Lesson Plan:
Calm
- Intro – Start by having each child say their name and their intention. Class responds, “I hear you, I see you” (5 min)
- Belly Breathing – Hoberman Sphere – Belly breathing with the Hoberman Sphere. Pulse count, 1 minute. Have a leader come up to use the sphere and count the breaths. (5 min)
- Volcanic Breath – Practice volcanic breath and let the children send heart thoughts or compliments to one another. Ask for volunteers to share their thought. (5 min)
Activate
- Chair 15 – To get the body moving and ready to work together. (15 minutes)
- Tree – Try practicing this posture on your own to see how you balance. Then try the other side. (1 minute)
- Tree Circle – now as a group try the tree circle and see the difference with the support of your friends. Ask the kids what they notice about the two different trees and to think about a time in their lives when they felt supported. (5 minutes)
- UFO Ball Game – Have the girls form a circle and show how the ball lights up when the connection is closed. Then have various people break the connection. Demonstrating working together as a community. (5 minutes)
Calm
- Back Drawing – Seat all the girls in a close circle facing right. Go thru the rain, thunder, lightening, clouds and sun descriptions as the girls draw on each other’s backs. End by drawing a gift for the person on their back and then whispering what it is in their ear. Have students share what gifts they received. (10 min)
- Relaxation – End with a guided relaxation, “The Boat Ride.” (10 min)
