Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Lesson Plan:

  • Procedures: remind students when they come in to find a mat and sit criss-cross.
  • Discuss that yoga is a quiet activity to help each other concentrate and quiet our minds.
  • Let them know I’ll be looking for volunteers to help lead.
  • Briefly introduce today’s focus: Community.

  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman Sphere: Students sit criss cross, have them “pull string” from top of head to sit tall. Model process of breathing with sphere. Ask student to hold sphere. Ask another student to count 5 or 7 breaths as we breathe.
  • Compliments – Community: Have students give compliments for volunteers.
  • Pulse Count – Show students where to place two fingers next to mouth and slide down. Count pulse for 15 seconds. Share & discuss results.

  • Boat – Cue: lift the upper chest. Hold in boat while rowing and sing “Row, row, row your boat”.
  • Rock & Roll – Cue students before beginning on safety. Do 3-4 times, then come to a stand.
  • Mountain – Cue: all four corners of the feet. Imagery: Stand tall, feel how this pose helps you feel confident, and strong. Imagine being part of a chain of mountains, each one connected to the other to form a wall together. Community: cue students to think of a time when you helped someone.
  • Plank – Cue: make your body flat like a board- model bottom not up or down, but center.
  • Cobra – Breathe in on the way up; hiss like a snake on the exhale.
  • Down Dog
  • Sun Salutation Sequence – do twice per side. Hold each pose for 2 full breaths
Model first time, then choose student leaders for subsequent salutations. Community: After each sequence, have students compliment leaders.
