Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Stillness

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – with sphere for 10 counts – allow student to lead with sphere
  • Read a Mindful Moment Card – Allow child to choose a stillness card and read it

Activate

  • Tree Pose (pg. 91) – let wind blow then be still several times
  • Chair 15 (pg. 157) 3x – have student lead, and have other students give compliments (I gave compliments because this was a private lesson)
  • Roots (pg. 85)
  • Activate/ Relax Walk (pg. 58) – allow student to play drum while relax walking and stop to signal time to stop and activate (I gave compliments because it was a private lesson)
  • Chair Twist (pg. 95)

Calm

  • Ask students to sit completely still for 30 seconds
  • Relaxation – Ask children to lie down on their backs and close their eyes. Imagine that you are walking into a garden with many giant colorful butterflies. You have to be very still and quiet so they will flutter to you and land on your shoulder. When a butterfly lands on you, it makes you feel warm and safe and calm. (wait for a three minutes for the students to have this experience) Now that they have spent a few minutes with you, they flutter back to the colorful flowers. Gently and quietly walk away so that you don’t scare them. Now return to your mat and open your eyes when you are ready.
  • Mindful Snack (pg. 118)
