Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Community

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman Sphere as a community (kids participate and lead)
  • Community Activity – Exploring Feelings – Brainstorm a list of feelings with kids and write them on the board. Ask students the purpose of the different feelings and write down responses. Ask kids to come to the front of the room and act out one of the feelings; give the class three tries to guess correctly and then have kid reveal the feeling. Discuss how different feelings can look the same, and it can be hard to tell the difference; explore what kids think about how to find out what a person is feeling, and risks of assuming you know without asking. Discuss posture and how it can communicate a feeling; have students demonstrate a posture of strength and one of victimization. Variations: two feelings at once, “hidden” feelings masked by others, sudden change in feelings and discuss why it happens, how to care for self when certain feelings are present
  • Silent “feelings check” with the body to see what you are feeling in the moment

Activate

  • Block Creek Game – set up blocks like a “river,” kids take turns walking across them
A few ‘cycles’ of the game: start with eyes open, complimenting each other; then eyes closed with group members holding and guiding; then eyes closed on their own with group members cheering them on
  • Community Yoga Series:
    • Volcano breath, arm swings
    • Include Warrior 1 and Warrior II: close eyes and imagine your community around you, helping you be strong and stable
    • Tree circle

Calm

  • Community Circle – with back drawing
  • Pinwheel Breathing together—use the strength of all of our breaths to move them
  • Mindful Moments Cards and discussion
