Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Stillness

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Chime – have students give a thumbs up when they no longer hear the sound
  • Pulse Count – have students feel their pulse for 20 seconds while standing still, then have students run in place for 10 seconds, recheck pulse and ask what the students think (talk about the importance of slowing pulse and being calm)
  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman sphere- Have one student lead with another student counting off the selected number of breaths (3rd student picks number of breaths); have students give compliments
  • Volcano Breaths – Practice these breaths to release the worries and bring in the positive, happy thoughts

Activate

  • Yoga Flow – twist (seated), cat/cow, child’s pose, downward dog, plank, cobra, downward dog (repeat these few poses x5), forward fold, mountain, side stretch, tree, dancer, eagle, forward fold, star with wide leg bend, twist, mountain, chair, boat, superman on back- remind students to activate hands into the mat for poses and to find a sense of calm when balancing in the poses (dancer, eagle, mountain), instruct students to take deep belly breaths and to find the stillness in their bodies while balancing
  • Activate/Relax Walk – teach game and allow students to feel how their bodies can slow down quickly and how they can use this when they are upset or have worries
  • Mat Tag

Calm

  • Relaxation – Legs up wall- help students to find legs up the wall to allow their bodies to slow down; have students place their hands on their bellies and feel their bellies rise in/out as they allow their bodies to find that calm and stillness
