Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Listening

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Chime – have students give a thumbs up when they no longer hear the sound
  • Pulse Count – find your pulse and then listen to the rhythm of your heart; picture a big drum each time you feel the beat of your heart and imagine how strong and powerful your drum is
  • Leg Stretch – instruct students to expand toes to the ceiling and breathe through the pose
  • Belly Breaths – seated- feel the soft rise and fall of your hands on your belly
    Volcano breaths- Practice these breaths to release the worries and bring in the positive, happy thoughts
  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman sphere – Have one student lead with another student counting off the selected number of breaths (3rd student picks number of breaths); have students give compliments

Activate

  • Yoga Flow – Rock and roll, boat, mountain, forward fold, bent knee lunge, Downward Dog, plank, Downward Dog, bent knee lunge, forward fold, mountain, tree, dancer, star
  • Activate/Relax Walk – have the students move from active to relax and talk about the importance of slowing down our bodies and the importance of being good listeners to play the game
  • Archetype Game – play this game with soft music and pause the music when the student should go into a new character (examples: queen, warrior, dog, cat)
  • Block Creek – lead this activity and have the student hold hands and support one another while crossing the “hot lava”; remind the students the importance of supporting their friends
  • Yoga Flow – mountain, volcano breaths, forward fold, boat, twist while lying on back on mat, legs in air; remind students to breathe in boat pose and not hold their breath

Calm

  • Guided Relaxation – lead students on a trip to a warm, sunny place with cool blue ocean water and talk about the waves as they feel their breath rise in/out (hands on belly while student lie on their backs)
