Yoga Calm Principle/Lesson Goal: Strength

Lesson Plan:

Calm

  • Belly Breathing – with Hoberman Sphere – student leads , chooses number of breaths and student to count; compliments for leader and counter
  • One-Minute Exploration – Students take a One-Minute Exploration to think about the question: “ What does it mean to be strong, are there different kinds of strength?”
  • Sharing – Students share their ideas in groups of five, 3 minutes, a group recorder writes down ideas; each recorder reports and teacher writes ideas on the board; class discussion- emphasis upon the concept of different kinds of strength…emotional, mental and physical, etc
  • Seated Twist – twist to each side, hold 2 breaths; after hearing class ideas, students are encouraged to take a moment and think about what strengths they have…

Activate

  • Yoga Calm Poses – to represent each kind of strength – body/physical, mind/mental
    and heart/emotional; teacher demos “chair” pose to represent strength of heart and determination ; students think of and lead poses for physical and mental strength…
    i.e. physical – Woodchopper/Warrior I / Plank; mental – Tree/Dancer/Eagle…
    Does it take strength to volunteer to lead? compliments for leaders.
  • Yoga Calm Mat 20 – (if floor mat space not available, replace with Chair 15) one time through, students lie on backs, begin flow with Leg Stretches – end the flow with holding Tree, second time; pausing in the flow to connect with different kinds of strength – i.e. ” in Chair pose…feel the strength of your legs and of your determination as you hold this pose”…..” in Boat pose, activating your strong middle as you hold your chest up , proud and strong; …concentrating as you move through the poses…. holding a strong focus in Tree…
  • Volcano Breaths –  student leads – 3 times – 1st time: think of someone who is strong for you as you stretch tall and strong… ; 2nd time: think of a way you are strong…..; 3rd time: think of a way you would like to become stronger….; would anyone like to share? (teacher emphasis – we are all strong….strong in different ways…discovering new ways we can become stronger every day).

Calm 

  • Forward Bend – then lie on belly
  • Superman – we can be our own superhero/heroines….by discovering and building on our own strengths
  • Twist – Roll over to back for Supine Twist – 2 breaths each side
  • Guided Relaxation – teacher guides students through Progressive Relaxation and Ending with Eleanor Roosevelt quote : “You must do the things you think you cannot do.”
